PLANNING YOUR VISIT

Planning to visit SLPL's Genealogy Room in the near future? You can quickly and easily create a list of items to look at while here using your home computer!

Note: Let’s assume you’re looking for info on Gasconade County (Mo.) ancestors.

Go here and click Catalog (near top of the screen).

The Search Bar on this screen should say All Fields.

Type gasconade county missouri genealogy (case doesn’t matter) and click Search.

You will get a list of library materials that match your search criteria. To the left of each title listed is a number and a little box. Click on the little box next to each title of interest to save it. Once you’ve looked at all the choices on that screen, click Print It and More at the bottom of the screen.

You will be offered a number of choices, including:

Place Hold(s)
Add to Your Lists

Text This to Me

You can thus immediately print a list of your selections; email or text the list to your phone or computer (or the phone or computer of a friend). You don’t need to be a Library cardholder to do any of these things.

If you are a cardholder, you can also create a List that attaches to your account, or you can place a hold on circulating items (sorry, most items in the Genealogy Room do not circulate).

By the way, if you want your search for Gasconade County items to be fairly thorough, you should also search using each of the following phrases:

gasconade county missouri history
gasconade county missouri newspapers

THE BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY

INTRODUCTION

The British early in the War of 1812 blockaded American ports with 75 naval vessels, greatly reducing American imports and exports, and angering many residents of New England who were dependent on foreign trade for their livelihoods.

After Napoleon's defeat and abdication in 1814, the British were able to begin a land offensive against the Americans. They were able to burn Washington, D.C., in 1814, but were unable to reduce or capture Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor ("The Star-Spangled Banner").

The British also began a campaign against New Orleans in an effort to block commerce on the Mississippi River. In a battle fought two weeks after a peace treaty between Britain and the U.S. had been signed, a force of militiamen and Army regulars under Andrew Jackson decisively defeated a force of British regulars at the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815.

THE WARSAW UPRISING

INTRODUCTION

The Warsaw Uprising was a major World War II operation by the Polish resistance Home Army to liberate Warsaw from occupying German forces. The rebellion was timed to coincide with the approach of the Soviet Union's Red Army towards the eastern suburbs of the city while the Germans retreated. The Soviet advance stopped abruptly, however, which enabled the Germans to regroup and demolish the city while inflicting horrific casualties on the Polish resistance, which fought on for 63 days with little outside support.

The Uprising was the largest single military effort undertaken by any European resistance movement during World War II. Warsaw was finally liberated from German control on 17 January 1945 by the Red Army and the First Polish Army—although by this time, 85% of the buildings in Warsaw had been destroyed, and at least 150,000 Polish civilians had been killed in the fighting or executed summarily by the Germans.

JOAN OF ARC: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY

INTRODUCTION

Joan of Arc (French: Jeanne d'Arc) was born 6 January 1412 to a peasant family in north-eastern France. She claimed to have received visions from God instructing her to support the French claimant to the throne (Charles VII) by relieving France from English domination during the Hundred Years' War. Charles sent her to Orleans as part of a relief mission to that besieged city. The siege was lifted a scant nine days after her arrival.

Several additional French victories in rapid succession led to the coronation of Charles at Reims. On 23 May 1430, Joan was captured at Compiegne by the Burgundians (English allies) and transferred to English custody. She was put on trial by the pro-English Bishop of Beauvais (Pierre Cauchon) on a variety of charges, and was burned at the stake for heresy at the age of 19. Joan would later be declared a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.

ELLIS ISLAND: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY

INTRODUCTION

Ellis Island, in Upper New York Bay, was the gateway for millions of immigrants to the United States. It served as the nation's busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892-1954. The island was greatly enlarged with land reclamation between 1892-1934. Ellis Island was made part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1965, and has hosted a museum of immigration since 1990. Although long considered part of New York State, a 1998 United States Supreme Court decision found that most of the island is in New Jersey.

THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY

INTRODUCTION

The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on 1 January 1863. Contrary to popular opinion, it did not free all the slaves then held in the United States. It in fact only freed the slaves in those states then in rebellion against the United States. It did not apply to slave states that had remained loyal to the Union, or to any area controlled by the Union Army on 1 January 1863.

Lincoln had previously issued a Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on 22 September 1862. This proclamation gave slave states a chance to end the rebellion and keep their slaves, for the Proclamation of 1 January 1863 would only apply to states still in a state of rebellion. None of the rebelling states took advantage of this opportunity.
