LITTLE WARS

INTRODUCTION

Yes, my young friends, there was a time back in the Dark Ages (pre-1990 by your definition) when we old folks didn’t play games on computers. You may not believe this, but we didn’t have computers—-well, we did, but the smallest one filled an entire room, meaning it was not portable by anyone’s definition…

Because of this lack of computers, the games we played involved playing cards and/or board games. That might seem quaint to you young people, but we actually had a lot of fun playing such games. Why, I remember a game of Risk in grad school where we had to chug a beer each time we lost a country—-err, but I digress…

The mention of Risk brings us around to today’s subject: wargames-— preferably, such games played on boards using miniature soldiers and other game pieces. There are people (mostly old guys my age, I’ll admit) who put a lot of time and effort into playing/creating such games. The books in the following list can provide you with more information about the fascinating world of wargames and wargamers, one of whom was H.G. Wells—yes, that H.G. Wells, the Time Machine/War of the Worlds guy. Wells and his club buddies played a war game using miniature artillery pieces that actually fired (see his book, Little Wars, below).

Notes: I’ve included a few books on “little wars,” that is, smaller-scale conflicts like the Spanish-American War or the Zulu War of 1879 in this list. They can be less daunting starting points for prospective wargamers.

THE SINKING OF THE TITANIC

INTRODUCTION

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City. She carried 2,224 passengers and crew. The sinking caused the deaths of more than 1,500 people, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in modern history.

The RMS Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time it entered service. It was the second of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, and was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. Thomas Andrews, her naval architect, Andrews was among those lost during the sinking.

THE GREAT BLIZZARD OF 1888

INTRODUCTION

Think we’ve got it bad this year? It’s true—it has snowed quite a few times this winter, but we haven’t really had a monster snowstorm as yet. Our ancestors did in 1888, though…

The Great Blizzard of 1888 (March 11 – March 14, 1888) was a blizzard to remember. Snowfalls of 20–60 inches fell in parts of New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, while sustained winds of more than 45 miles per hour produced snowdrifts up to 50 feet in height. Railroads and other modes of transport were shut down and people confined to their houses for a week or more (hope they stocked up on milk and eggs, the way St. Louis people do when the forecast calls for 2 or 3 inches of the white stuff)…

THE 1918 FLU PANDEMIC: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY

INTRODUCTION

The 1918 flu pandemic (January 1918–December 1920) was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic, the first of the two pandemics involving H1N1 influenza virus (the second being the 2009 flu pandemic). It infected 500 million people across the world, including remote Pacific islands and the Arctic, and killed 50 to 100 million of them—three to five percent of the world's population —making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in human history.

The pandemic surfaced at Fort Riley, Kansas in early 1918. By mid-March, more than 500 soldiers there were exhibiting flu symptoms:

INTRODUCTION

The Battle of the Alamo began on February 23, 1836, when Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas). The siege ended on March 6, 1836, when Mexican troops captured the mission and all the Texian defenders were killed. The massacre of the survivors inspired many Texas settlers—and some adventurers from the United States—to join the Texian Army. Their resolve hardened by a desire for revenge, the Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836.

INTRODUCTION

The Battle of Iwo Jima (aka Operation Detachment) was a major battle in which the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps made an amphibious landing on the island of Iwo Jima and captured it from the Japanese. The intent of the American invasion was to gain control of the island's three airfields that (it was hoped) could be used to provide a staging area for attacks on the Japanese homeland. This five-week battle (19 February–26 March 1945) included some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

JOAN OF ARC: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY

INTRODUCTION

Joan of Arc (French: Jeanne d'Arc) was born 6 January 1412 to a peasant family in north-eastern France. She claimed to have received visions from God instructing her to support the French claimant to the throne (Charles VII) by relieving France from English domination during the Hundred Years' War. Charles sent her to Orleans as part of a relief mission to that besieged city. The siege was lifted a scant nine days after her arrival.

Several additional French victories in rapid succession led to the coronation of Charles at Reims. On 23 May 1430, Joan was captured at Compiegne by the Burgundians (English allies) and transferred to English custody. She was put on trial by the pro-English Bishop of Beauvais (Pierre Cauchon) on a variety of charges, and was burned at the stake for heresy at the age of 19. Joan would later be declared a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.

ELLIS ISLAND: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY

INTRODUCTION

Ellis Island, in Upper New York Bay, was the gateway for millions of immigrants to the United States. It served as the nation's busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892-1954. The island was greatly enlarged with land reclamation between 1892-1934. Ellis Island was made part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1965, and has hosted a museum of immigration since 1990. Although long considered part of New York State, a 1998 United States Supreme Court decision found that most of the island is in New Jersey.

THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY

INTRODUCTION

The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on 1 January 1863. Contrary to popular opinion, it did not free all the slaves then held in the United States. It in fact only freed the slaves in those states then in rebellion against the United States. It did not apply to slave states that had remained loyal to the Union, or to any area controlled by the Union Army on 1 January 1863.

Lincoln had previously issued a Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on 22 September 1862. This proclamation gave slave states a chance to end the rebellion and keep their slaves, for the Proclamation of 1 January 1863 would only apply to states still in a state of rebellion. None of the rebelling states took advantage of this opportunity.

THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE

INTRODUCTION

The Battle of the Bulge was the last major German offensive of World War II. It began on 16 December 1944, when German forces broke through Allied defenses in the Ardennes. The German drive was intended to seize Antwerp, split Allied forces in the west, and bring about the surrender of one or more Allied armies. Bad weather (bitter cold and heavy snow) hampered Allied air and supply operations, although it also hindered German movements. Improved weather conditions allowed Allied forces to reinforce weak points in their lines, and to resume air operations against German offensive positions and supply lines.

American forces suffered nearly 90,000 casualties during this German offensive, including 19,000 soldiers killed in action.

THE BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG

Historical Background

Lincoln and other Northern politicians wanted General George B. McClellan to follow up the narrow Union victory at Antietam with another, more substantial victory over General Robert E. Lee's army. When McClellan failed to set his army in motion, Lincoln replaced him with General Ambrose Burnside.

Burnside knew he had two choices: strike off for the fertile Shenandoah Valley, and disrupt Lee's food supplies and supply routes, or cross the Rappahannock River at Fredericksburg, Virginia and set off towards Richmond. Because a move towards Fredericksburg would keep the bulk of the Union Army between Lee and Washington, D.C., Burnside chose to set off in that direction.

The Battle of Fredericksburg was a clear statistical victory for the CSA, although General Lee regretted not being able to more greatly hinder his opponent's retreat across the Rappahannock River. It was also a clear strategic and tactical triumph for General Lee, whose placement of artillery and infantry made it well-nigh impossible for Burnside to actually take those positions. But it didn't end Union attempts to move towards Richmond- those would resume with a vengeance in the spring of 1863.
